After the unexpected death of his mother, Ethan Wate can’t wait to get out of the small Southern town of Gatlin and pursue something worthwhile in his life. Suddenly a new girl comes into the town and she’s stirring up quite a storm among it’s residents. Aside from being new to the town, Lena’s actually the niece of Gatlin’s infamous shut-in Macon Ravenwood. A chance encounter in the rain propels the plot and Ethan suddenly finds himself questioning everything about the sleepy town he grew up in. This is the first book in The Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
-Synopsis (in my own words)
Thoughts in Details:
The novel is refreshingly told from Ethan’s perspective which is one of its fun elements. As a guy and an avid Young Adult or YA reader I noticed that most YA novels features female voices that I could not relate to. Being told from a guys perspective the novel points out how Ethan befriends and eventually (SPOILER ALERT I think) court the mysterious Lena Duchaness. But I am here to say that there are moments in the story that the author’s feminine voices translates into what Ethan was thinking about.
I related to both Ethan (his idea of doing something grander in his life) and Lena (her longing for acceptance) which means the authors really molded realistic characters. Speaking of characters one of the great things about this novel are the minors. There’s the sassy yet lovable Amma, the wise-cracking best friend named Link, the annoying Mrs. Lincoln (Link’s mom), the Boo Radley of Gatlin Macon Ravenwood and the sultry Ridley. To me the minor characters really stood out and that they’re the reason why this novel grew on me. The concept of Casters or simply put witches is so awesome and is what won me over!
I also liked the whole message of the book (and the whole series actually) which is that you are the master of your own fate. You are the only one who can answer the problems you are facing. So if you want something that could quench your thirst during the whole Twilight and Harry Potter withdrawal you better grab a copy of this novel ASAP!
I give this book a…
It started off really slow but it eventually picked up momentum and I really liked the whole Caster mythology!
